Kit comes complete with installation instructions, STC paperwork, all hardware and parts, landing light lens and standard small droop wing tips....

The kit also has aileron gap seals, and recommends not using flap gap seals with this kit.

Skins are 2424-T3 alcad aluminum, .025 thickness

Skins are installed with Cherry max pull rivets, 91-62

Install time:  estimated as 50 labor hours for 1st time installers and 25 for the experienced.

The Sportsman STOL modification itself was originated by Marvin Davis, a lockheed Skunkworks engineer who developed it while studying NASA technical notes pertaining to airfoil stall and spin characteristics from NASA's Langley Research Center. After finalizing his findings through wind tunnel tests, Marvin obtained the rights from Lockheed. Sadly, Mr. Davis passed away before realizing the full potential of this discovery. Enter Marshall Quackenbush. Acquiring the rights from Mr. Davis' widow, Marshall pushed forward with the work to develop on of general aviation's greatest discoveries. Since the kit's inception, it has been installed, sometimes replacing other STOL modifications, on over 3000 airplanes, with customers including the Alaska Fish and Game Department, The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, various law enforcement agencies worldwide, and owners in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, South America, England, Mexico, as well as all over the United States.

The Sportsman STOL wing cuff is a state of the art modification designed to increase light plane utility and safety by increasing the wings efficiency and resistance to stalls and spins. The kit includes shallow drooped wing tips that extend approximately two inches forward of the original wing. The Sportsman STOL is not just a lip on the bottom, but is a re-engineered airfoil. The aim of the Sportsman STOL modification is to improve aerodynamics. The Sportsman STOL achieves this by streamlining the impingement point for smoother airflow and less drag. The second benefit is that the airflow remains smooth to a lower airspeed (increased laminar flow) and the stall curve is considerably extended. The Sportsman STOL increases the wing area by about four square feet.

What will it do for You?

  • Nearly double the lift co-efficient
  • Increase flap efficiency
  • Increased rate of climb
  • Eliminate the classic stall
  • Increase glide ratio
  • Increase fuel economy
  • Raise service ceiling
  • Reduce landing & take off speeds
  • NO reduction in cruise performance
  • Reduce stagnation point drag
  • Make flying fun again

Sportsman FAQ's

  1. What is included in the kit?        The kit includes inboard composite fairing, new leading edge skins, transition blocks, new landing light lens assembly (applicable models), aileron gap seals (except for 206), all rivets, composite wingtips, installation drawings and instructions, and STC paperwork.

  2. What is the average installation time?        For an individual who has not installed the kit before the installation takes 40-50hours without paint.  Experienced installers on average take 30-40hours.

  3. Is the kit STC'd for my aircraft, see list above.

  4. How is the Sportsman different than other STOL kits? Other STOL kits utilize a leading edge "roll cuff", and others incorporate drooping ailerons as well.  These "roll cuffs" as we like to refer to them, increase the leading edge radius of the airfoil.  The concept of a "roll cuff" is not new.  There was an Italian by the name of Lombardi that used the leading edge roll back in the 1920's and while it does aid in moderately improving stall speeds it does not have the performance gains as offered by the Sportsman.     The Sportsman extends and droops the leading edge, without modifying the radius, therefore modifying the camber of the wing and adding over 4sq. feet of area to the wing.  We sell many Sportsman kits to aircraft owners every year who remove their existing "roll cuff" and/or couple it to their drooped ailerons and they all report further performance increases of 10-15% and increases in aileron effectiveness.  Look at the graph above to compare the Sportsman leading edge profile with others. The Sportsman not only increases aircraft performance but dramatically alters the stall behavior of the aircraft.  The stall becomes a mush rather than the classic break in pitch of a non-modified aircraft.  This allows controllability of the aircraft all the way through stall with reduced altitude loss over the non-modified aircraft.  The increase in safety due to these characteristics is what keeps customers coming back.     The Sportsman was developed using modern airfoil wind tunnel results from NASA's Langley Research center.  This technology profoundly improves performance, stall behavior, and safety of aircraft and is the only technology found in currently offered STOL features being used in the modern aircraft developed today, i.e. Quest Kodiak.

  5. Do you offer installation?  Yes, at Stene Aviation located in Polson, MT. Their average installation is approximately 30-35hours charged at their shop hourly rate.

  6. Upon installation what is the change in weight & balance?    The kit adds 15 pounds at 22".

  7. What degree of countersink do you use with the Avex rivet?    The Avex rivets supplied with the kit utilize a 120º countersink.  You can purchase these from Brown Aviation Tool Supply
